Bonacosta Valpolicella Classico 2008, Masi
Valpolicella should typically have a nose that reminds you of cherries, and this does not disappoint. There is so much poor quality Valpolicella on the supermarket shelves, but this is the real deal and well worth trying. It is a blend of the three main varieties, Corvina, Rondinella and a little Molinara, from Masi vineyards in the historic Valpolicella Classico zone. The wine is aged for 6 months in large, old Slavonian oak barrels and 20% of the Corvina in new Alliers and Slavonian oak casks. Other than the cherry notes, there are aromas of violets, roses, mint and spices - cinnamon and cloves came to mind. Great with pasta!
