Matakana Moko 2009 (Merlot/Cabernet Franc), Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
This premium red from Matakana Estate is a blend of 71% Merlot and 29% Cabernet Franc, influenced by the great wines of St Emilion. Although NZ does not quite reach the hedonistic intensity of their nearest neighbours reds, Hawkes Bay can still deliver richly endowed wines. Heady with aromas of ripe blackberries, blackcurrants, plums and dark chocolate. Hints of spicy oak and subtle characters of cigar box and coffee add a touch of mystery. Intense flavours of ripe dark fruits are layered within a fine structure. The complex yet seductively smooth palate leads on to a long, elegant finish. Pefect with grilled lamb steaks on the BBQ!
