Mompertone 2008, Prunotto
A delicious modern blend from Piedmont - 60% Barbera and 40% Syrah. This wine offers aromas of plum, cherry, freshly-roasted coffee and peppery spice. Plump and ripe in the mouth, yet retaining admirable focus and finesse. We felt it went extremely well with some slow roast port belly the other day, but any hearty casserole should work just as well.
Alfredo Prunotto gave his name and thirty-three years of his life to this renowned winery in Piedmont. Since 1989 it has been owned by the Antinori family, who have sought to boost the already high standards by extending the vineyard holdings, including plots in the de facto grands crus of Bric Turot and Bussia. The quality of the top wines goes without saying, but the rest of the range is made with equal aplomb. The style is modern without being exaggerated: freshness of aroma and approachability of structure are viewed as positives.
