Deakin Estate Viognier 2010, Victoria, Australia
This is an aromatic wine displaying typical aromatic qualityies of this variety - apricots, honeysuckle and orange peel. The palate is soft and luscious, whilst retaining good balance and a refreshing finish. What makes this wine stand out is that it's not a particularly extravagant style of Viognier that typifies many examples of this variety from Australia, but then nor is it a refrained, understated example that would represent a typical European example - it sits somewhere in the middle of these styles, which is why we like it.
Deakin Estate is a substantial family-owned vinyeard and winery located in the Mildura region of north-west Victoria. The property was purchase din 1967 and named in honour of Alfred Deakin, a former the Australian Prime Minister who pioneers irrigation in this arid region. Fed by the mighty Murray River, Mildura continues t produce high quality citrus fruit, olives, almonds...and grapes. The fruit from Deakin's 350 hectares of vineyards was sold off until 1980, when the winery was built. This allows the best grapes to stay in house, yileding a range of delicious, stylish, value-for-money wines.
The vines comes from vineyards aged between 5 and 15 years old, the juice was fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures and bottled without oak or malolatic influence to ensure maximum freshness.
