May 2012
Here is a selection of wines we have hand picked for drinking this Spring.
Following on from our recent foray into the realms of Sussex as part of our our New New World of Wine, it seemed about time that we turned our attention to one of the original stars of the "old" New World of Wine, Australia.
Australia has inspired a radical change in the style of wine consumed in this country and with it, attracted consumers that may have otherwise found buying wine intimidating. Australia is the world's fourth largest exporter of wine and in so far as the UK market is concerned, has focused on key price points that dominate the supermarket shelves. We recently had an opportunity to meet several winemakers over from Australia and would like to introduce some new wines, which we believe offer excellent mid-week drinking.
As always, these recommendations are to reflect the changing seasons produce that will be gracing our tables this Spring. Please call Karl on 01273 242535, if you would like any further advice on what to drink this month.

Vacqueyras 2009 Domaine de la Soleiade
Domaine de la Soléiade is one of the highlights of a group of 80 vignerons in the heart of the Vacqueyras appellation, an area that is producing some of France's greatest value quality wines at the moment. The 2009 vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest for the 2009 Southern Rhone's and clearly the value hunters should be taking advantage of this gem. A blend of old Grenache vines and a touch of Syrah, this is a ripe, seductive, full bodied red with plenty of plump red and dark berry fruits, spice, licquorice and chocolate.
"Potentially even better, the 2009 Vacqueyras Domaine de la Soleaide comes from very old Grenache vines blended with Syrah, all aged in cement tanks. Slightly less expensive than Les Hauts de Castellas, it represents a great expression of Provencal viticulture. Lavender, spice box, tobacco leaf, jus de viande, licorice and kirsch notes emerge from this deep, plum/ruby-colored wine along with wonderful ripeness, admirable purity and a medium to full-bodied texture with no hard edges. It, too, should drink nicely for 5-6 years." 91-93 points, Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, October 2010.
